Everyone has something they can contribute
You don’t need to be an environmental expert. You don’t need gardening experience. And you don’t need to commit hours every week.
Ways to help
HEG doesn’t have paid staff. Everything from the Monday café to the wildlife work happens because someone gave their time — whether that’s an hour once, or every week.
Café volunteers
Cook, serve, wash up or simply welcome people through the door at the Monday Community Café.
Mondays, 10.30am – 2.30pm
Larder volunteers
Collect and sort rescued food, set out the week’s Larder and help visitors find what they need.
Mondays, 3.30pm – 5.30pm
Growing Ambassadors
Plant, weed, water and harvest at the HEG Grows plot — and help other people learn to grow at home.
Saturdays, 11am – 1pm
Book Swap Guardians
Check the Orchard Lane Book Swap, organise the shelves, remove damaged books and keep it weatherproof.
Whenever suits you
Watering helpers
Pick up a watering can through dry spells. No gardening knowledge needed, no regular commitment.
Through the summer
Event and learning helpers
Help plan, set up or run stalls, giveaways, workshops and sessions with schools and youth groups.
Throughout the year
Tell us what interests you
There’s no minimum commitment and no experience required. Send us a note and someone from HEG will get back to you about getting started.
