You might start to notice a few places around East Hendred looking a little wilder — and that's absolutely intentional!
Through HEG Space for Wildlife, we're encouraging people, organisations and community spaces across the village to mow less, leave areas of grass to grow and give nature a chance.
Longer grass and wild spaces can provide vital food, shelter and habitat for bees, butterflies, insects, birds and other wildlife. And you don't need acres of land to make a difference — even leaving one small patch unmown can help.
So if you see one of our Space for Wildlife signs beside an area of long grass, it hasn't been forgotten or neglected. We're not mowing it. We're growing it.
We also maintain the A417 Roadside Nature Reserve project between East and West Hendred, working with Oxfordshire County Council.
We'd love residents to join in too. Leave a patch, a verge or even just a corner of your lawn to grow and see what arrives. Small spaces across the village can add up to one much bigger Space for Wildlife.
